Who is John Jasuta?

I am an attorney dedicated to obtaining justice for those who cannot help themselves. I am committed to the area of post conviction criminal law, including appeals from criminal convictions and post-conviction writ work. I have more than 35 years experience practicing law.

I began practice in 1975, as a member of the Staff Counsel for Inmates (TDCJ-CID), in Huntsville, Texas. I was appointed General Counsel to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles in Austin, then later become a member of the Central Staff of the Court of Criminal Appeals. I remained at the Court for almost twenty-five years, ultimately leading the habeas section of the Staff.

During the last 30 years, I have been a frequent contributor to continuing education programs for attorneys as well as for District Clerks and Judges. I have authored several articles on habeas corpus, as well as on time credits and their relationship with offenders' terms. I continue my interest in legal education by continuing to help sponsor several legal conferences and weekly legal update discussions. Following my 2003 retirement from the State, I entered private practice, limiting my area of concentration primarily to a post-conviction criminal practice. However, recognizing the potential for pre-trial extraordinary relief, in both mandamus and habeas corpus, I do not completely restrict my practice and have been involved in several pre-trial writ actions since my retirement from the State.

I am admitted to practice in Texas and, additionally, I am a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition, I was selected as a Super Lawyer in 2009-2012, which is a listing of outstanding lawyers compiled by Thompson Reuters Service, from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.
